Basically, a pond is a manmade body of water although some people have started calling small bodies of water which are naturally made ponds. Ponds are not so deep so that most people can go wading in them. The first step to making a small pond is to scout out the area where you wan it to be. Ponds are usually directly hit by sunlight so that it can sustain life. Fresh water ponds with fish are usually supplied with lilies or plants that act as shade to the fish because if they are constantly under the sun they die. Fish need shade in order to have cooler waters.

Ideally, ponds should not be as deep as a persons waist. This is to avoid drowning and other accidents. The depth of the pond should not be too shallow also because shallow water heats up fast and the fish will die in the hot water.

This is usually for ponds that are made from artificial containers such as cement, plastic and others. You can not have too many fish in a small pond. You must also consider that other animals might take an interest in your pond such as frogs and insects.
